Unbelievable that a Boston health care institution with a reputation long as your arm would squander millions of dollars on an insane nursing contract that will only hurt the health care profession by fostering contempt from potential donors and resentment from the administrative staff - who will probably be told what other hospitals tell their admin staff; that no matter how much grunt work they process and file, or how many hoops they jump through - there's only 3% for them.
DO NURSES HAVE MORE STRESS AND LIABILITY THAN THE GOVERNOR OF MASSACHUSETTS, WHO IS RESPONSIBLE 24/7 FOR THE WELFARE OF NEARLY 6.5 MILLION RESIDENTS, AND WHOSE SALARY WAS A BIT MORE THAN $140, 000 LAST YEAR? I don't think so.
I have friends who have been R.N.s for years, and even they are quietly scratching their heads. Patient care won't be improved - it will suffer. Why? Because too many will be coming into the profession for the money, not for the commitment to help others. So, they'll do the bare minimum to get through their shifts. Plus, this will hurt smaller community hospitals. Their nurses will see this and bark that they want more money or threaten they're leaving to go "in town". So, those smaller hospitals (99% of which are non-profits) will have no choice but to throw out a few bucks more an hour to quiet the masses for a while - until the next contract negotiation. Then, they'll all go for the organization's throat and most of them will watch the bottom line ink fade from black to red. Shame on the Boston hospitals for allowing this to get out of control and knowing the unions will take advantage. They are doing to healthcare what real estate brokers did to the housing market. I guess, like sports, its become all about the $$$$$$$....
