Set up the Log-on to Boston.com with a subscription that charges 50 cents a day to an assigned credit card, no matter how many times the user signs in during that day - the Sunday edition would cost, say, $1.50. If the user doesn't sign in, they are not charged.
No you say, because the paper would get clobbered with transaction merchant fees!
All the Globe has to do is set it up so each customer is billed once a week, for one transaction, with an email sent notifying the customer of the amount. The customer pays for what they use, and the newspaper generates a consistent stream of revenue for their online content.
